Chapter Seven

Roman

If there is one indication that tells me about Sugar’s mood, it’s the way she bakes. Every day there is a freshly baked snack at the kitchen table for me, and it would be gone the moment I put my hands on them. Those are the normal days, but today is different.

I count ten different kinds of baked goods that range from cookies to a whole cake, and I wonder how she has the time to do all of that. I must have been so tired from work that I slept through the entire baking process, and I would have come out of my room.

Maybe I would have seen Sugar.

The time isn’t right yet. If it’s time to meet, then we will meet, and I’m not going to force it.

She is happy today. My mood reflects on that because I’m seeing Sadie in a couple of hours and I should let Sugar know that I’m going to be out for a while.

Sugar likes to wait for me to come home to make sure I’m not lying dead in the ditch somewhere. The moment I told her that I was a bouncer at a club, she already made a judgment call that she is going to be awake until I’m home.

She will call the police if I’m late home as I have a set schedule when I get off from work. Sugar is protective; her natural instinct to put me first trumps her fright of bothering someone else even if it’s the police.

I take a stack of post-it notes and a gel pen from a cup filled with them. My feet carry me to her bedroom, and I give a subtle knock to see if he’s awake at nine in the morning on a Saturday.

I assumed that she made her sweets and then went back to sleep since the food is still warm. I had a couple of scones, and she can’t blame me for trying to eat everything. She knows how much I love her baking, and it’s my weakness.

If she asks me for something that I don’t want with sweets as her weapon, I will beg for them.

There is sound from the other side, and I think she is asleep, so I write a message to tell her that I won't be coming home soon.

A thump that sounded like Sugar falling out of her bed can be heard. I hear the pen rolling around on the wooden floor behind the door and crouch down to receive the message from the same post-it note.

I find neat handwriting telling me that I should eat something first before I go out.

I shake my head at her kindness; her worry for me is appreciated as my heart warms at her consideration to a man who is most likely three times bigger than her.

I have eaten her graciously made breakfast at the kitchen table, but I’m worried that she hasn’t eaten yet and I don’t want her to starve. Taking the note again, I ask her if she had eaten and she replies with no.
